The 1st Meeting of National Committee on Small & Medium Enterprises (NCSME) was held on August 15, 2007 at Islamabad to formally launch SME Policy & set-off the process of SME Policy Implementation
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Jahangir Khan Tareen, Minister for Industries, Production & Special Initiatives. Other members of the Committee Minister of State for Economic Affairs, Governor State Bank, Chairman, Central Board of Revenue & private sector members were also present at the occasion.
Mr. Jahangir Khan Tareen reiterated the commitment of this Government to address SME issues. Formally launching SME Policy he highlighted that over the past few years, Government of Pakistan has taken a number of initiatives to promote and develop SME sector. However, a fundamental deficiency that remained was the absence of a policy framework to give these initiatives a context and focus and determine their future direction for optimization of benefits. SME policy is response to this strategic vacuum.
NCSME recommended among other things, initiation of:
- Dedicated SME Credit Information Bureau
- SME Credit Enhancement Mechanism
- Small Business Development Centers
- SME Industrial Estates on the pattern of Sundar Industrial Estate
Apart from the initiatives laid down in SME Policy implementation plan, the above initiatives would serve as triggers for catalyzing SME development in the country. |
