PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  • Improving craftsmanship skills by conducting short term/long training programmes for semi-skilled persons. Export business enhancement skills for clerical staff. Awareness seminars on how to discover new export markets.
  • BMR/Up-gradation of presently available Common Facility Center.
  • Introduction to new technologies and new generation of production tools.
  • Awareness on International Certification (Social, Environmental and Health & safety), testing and other regulations.
  • Support to cluster by establishing a Business Resource Center.

BRIEF PROFILE OF SECTOR

In this cluster with a population of 150,000, about 25% of the population is directly or indirectly employed by the cutlery sector. After agriculture, cutlery is the major source of income for the local population. Wazirabad started exporting cutlery products in 1960s, the cluster grew at a good growth rate during the early 1990s. The main products being exported from Wazirabad are knives, swords, daggers, sabers, spoons, forks, blades, etc. The cluster has managed to craft its niche in international market in decorative swords, daggers and hunting knives. During the 2003 Pakistan’s cutlery exports were US $ 29 mn, of which almost 90% was contributed by Wazirabad town. Pakistan’s share in world is 0.55% (2003) slightly above 0.47% (1997). Pakistan’s cutlery exports are facing tough competition in international market on account of high price, limited design range, long lead times, depreciating quality, and obsolete technology along with a lack of new generation of trained craftsmen.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT

EPB (Presently TDAP) in 1999 established Cutlery Institute of Pakistan (CIP) in Wazirabad at a total cost of Rs.50 mn out of which Rs.35.9 mn was disbursed. Revival of CIP will play a key role in triggering export order growth and equitable development in cutlery cluster.

BENEFITS TO THE SECTOR/SMEs

CIP will provide following facilities/services:

  • Training services (The institute will provide training during its provision plan of 5 years to almost 3000 unskilled, semiskilled craftsmen and managerial personnel)
  • Provide Common Facilities to local SMEs who cannot afford expensive equipments
  • Provide extensive practical opportunities to develop skills in using modern tools and techniques of production
